In 2020 the Friends contributed towards a new historical souvenir book about Hylands House.
HYLANDS ‘A REMARKABLY ELEGANT… MANSION HOUSE’ has been authored by committee member Nick Wickenden with social history contributions from committee member Linda Knock. Nick Wickenden was the head of Chelmsford Museum for many years and a leading figure in the city’s heritage sector. It was developed with Jarrold Publishing, a renowned heritage publisher, leading the way in beautiful book design, exquisite photography and illustration, confident editorial, and quality print services.
Hylands House is widely regarded as Chelmsford’s jewel in its crown. Amongst its 12 different owners, it has seen two MPs, two Chairmen of a nationally important brewery, a Merchant Banker and diplomat, local squires and JPs, an explorer with Ernest Shackleton, and now a local authority.
The extraordinary restoration is ultimately due to successive political administrations and their officers at Chelmsford Borough (now City) Council who sanctioned phase after phase of funding, supported by English Heritage, the Friends of Hylands House, and latterly the Heritage Lottery Fund.
For the first time a new comprehensive historical book is available for sale exploring it’s fascinating history and remarkable restorative journey. Either purchase online or in person in the Hylands Estate Information Point or The Friends of Hylands House Bookshop to avoid delivery fees.
